Local Anesthesia
Local anesthesia is used during dental treatments to numb a specific part of the mouth so that you do not feel pain while the work is done. It allows you to remain awake and aware, but free of discomfort in the treated area.
How it Works:
- A topical numbing gel or spray may first be applied to the surface of the gums or cheek to minimise the sting of the injection.
- Then the injectable local anesthetic is introduced, which blocks the nerve signals in that region, so pain cannot reach the brain.
- Depending on the area treated and the anaesthetic used, the numbness typically lasts a few hours.
- Before administering it, the dentist will check your health history (including medications, allergies, medical conditions) to select the right formulation.
What to Expect During the Procedure:
- You may feel a brief pinch or sting when the injection is given — this is normal and indicates the anesthetic is going to work.
- The treated area will gradually become numb; your lips, tongue or cheek may feel heavy or tingling.
- While numb, avoid biting or chewing in that region — you might accidentally bite your cheek or tongue because you can’t feel properly.
- If you have any unusual sensation or discomfort, mention it to the dentist.
