Home Care Instructions
Taking care of your smile at home is an essential part of your dental health journey
Every visit, treatment and cleaning at our office is supported by what you do between appointments. By maintaining good habits at home, you help ensure the effectiveness of your dental care and keep your teeth and gums in great shape.
Daily Care – Your Routine
- Brush at least twice a day using a fluoride-containing toothpaste to keep surfaces clean and protected.
- Clean between your teeth once daily (with floss, interdental brushes or similar tools) to remove plaque from places your toothbrush can’t reach.
- Rinse your mouth with water after snacks or sugary drinks to remove food residue and acids.
- Limit sticky, hard or sugary foods — these increase the risk of tooth decay and wear.
- Drink plenty of water and keep hydrated — this supports saliva production, which helps neutralise acids and wash away debris.
Post-Treatment & Recovery Care
Taking care of your smile at home is an essential part of your dental health journey
- Avoid chewing or biting on the treated side until numbness wears off or your dentist gives the go-ahead.
- Don’t use your treated teeth for very hard foods or objects (ice, pens, hard candy) until fully healed.
- For extractions or surgical sites: avoid straws, vigorous rinsing, smoking and alcohol for at least 24-72 hours (or as instructed) to allow blood-clot formation and healing.
- If you experience discomfort, swelling or sensitivity: use gentle measures like warm salt-water rinses (½–1 teaspoon salt in a cup of warm water) and over-the-counter pain relief (if medically appropriate) until you consult the dental team.
- If your bite feels uneven, you have persistent pain, or something doesn’t feel right — contact the clinic so we can check and adjust as needed.
Lifestyle & Long-Term Support
- Make regular dental check-ups a priority — early detection and maintenance mean fewer complications later.
- Avoid tobacco use, excessive alcohol, and habits like nail-biting, chewing ice or using your teeth as tools — all of these put your oral health at risk.
- Consider using protective gear (like custom mouthguards) if you play contact sports or grind your teeth at night.
- Follow any personalised recommendations given by your dentist — your home-care plan may be tailored to your specific needs (e.g., more frequent cleanings, special cleaning tools).
By combining professional dental care with mindful daily home care, you give your smile the best possible chance to stay healthy, comfortable and vibrant. Whenever you have questions about your home-care routine, or if you’re unsure about an instruction, please reach out — we’re here to help.
